Seven-Year-Old Brings Loaded Gun to School in Backpack

A second grade student apparently brought a gun to an elementary school in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York City.

Via:

Police are investigating after a loaded handgun was found in a 7-year-old boy's book bag at a school in Far Rockaway, a law enforcement official tells NBC 4 New York.

The boy's mom brought him to P.S. 215 Thursday morning, and came back to the school a short time later, claiming she needed to take him to a doctor appointment.

When she got back to the school, the loaded .22-caliber handgun was found and police were called. The school was then locked down for about 45 minutes.

It's not clear exactly how the gun was discovered.

Police are now questioning the mother and the brother of the boy, the law enforcement official said.

Thank goodness that the gun didn't discharge and hit someone. This time.

Obama's Weekly Address: American Hearts 'Heavy with Hurt'

In his weekly address, released this morning, President Barack Obama re-stated his desire for to take "meaningful action" in the wake of the shootings. But he did not expand on those remarks. He added words of sympathy:

"Most of those who died were just young children with their whole lives ahead of them. And every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt.

Among the fallen were also teachers – men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.

So our hearts are broken today. We grieve for the families of those we lost. And we keep in our prayers the parents of those who survived. Because as blessed as they are to have their children home, they know that their child’s innocence has been torn away far too early."

At the end of this school year, the Oakland Unified School District plans to close five public elementary schools and hand children’s school buildings over to private charter schools and district administration offices. Hundreds of the displaced students have been placed by the district in elementary schools that are 10 miles away, and the school district has offered no guarantee that transportation will be provided for families. In response…

Oakland Parents and Teachers Are Sitting-in to Keep Neighborhood Schools Open!

We Need Your Support!!!

On June 15th, after the last day of school, Oakland parents and teachers will sit in at Lakeview Elementary demanding that the district keep all neighborhood schools open. The district has not listened to lawsuits, pleas from parents and teachers, or protests. We know the money exists, but still they insist on closing flatland schools serving predominantly black and brown children. We say no more excuses! We’re keeping the schools open the last way left to us, by sitting-in. But we cannot do this alone. We need your support! Demand the district and the politicians give us full funding for quality education in neighborhood public schools. Join the fight for our kids’ futures!

We demand:

Don’t Close the 5 Schools! Keep All Neighborhood Schools Open! Children’s Needs Before Administration’s!
Stop Attacks on Teachers and School Workers! Teacher Conditions=Student Conditions.
Refuse to Pay the Unjust State Debt!
Fully Fund Quality Public Education for All Students!

Support the People’s School for Public Education:
