Tunisia Does the 'Harlem Shake'

You've probably seen at least one version of the "Harlem Shake" making the rounds online. In the video above you can watch Tunisia's version, which is quickly becoming a new form of political protest.

The New York Times Latitude Blog writes:

"The Arab revolutions are going through a rough patch, from political uncertainty in North Africa to daily massacres in Syria. Egypt appears, at times, on the brink of either economic collapse or a military coup. Tunisia is still reeling from a political assassination and may face prolonged instability, as negotiations for the formation of a new government unfold with little chance of a consensus emerging. Many ordinary citizens in both countries are depressed and disoriented.

But at least they haven’t lost their sense of humor.

The latest meme to take over both Egyptian and Tunisian social media involves filming a silly dance to the Harlem Shake, an electronic tune by the American D.J. Baauer, and uploading the result to YouTube. The trend started in Australia, but it has spread to the Middle East, with a twist: It is getting people arrested or in trouble, turning it into a new genre of political protest.

Maybe a Global Harlem Shake Day...you in?

Idle No More Solidarity Round Dance at KXL Construction Site

Over 100 Tar Sands Blockaders participated in a round dance lead by Choushatta organizer Ben Yahola in solidarity with Idle No More on land immediately adjacent to a KXL Pipeline construction site.

We arrived on the land, resided on by A family of Alamaba-Coushatta tribal members reside on the land, and when we arrived at 5pm on January 4th, we began setting up for the dance. Workers were milling about at the end of their work day and immediately noticed our banners. Police showed up shortly thereafter, but we were not disturbed in our peaceful demonstration of solidarity with Idle No More, Hunger Striking Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence, and all affected by toxic tar sands exploitation.

#OccupyBoston: No Eviction From Dewey Square

The midnight deadline for Occupy Boston protesters to leave Dewey Square has passed.

A judge lifted a restraining order on Wednesday that could have prevented the city of Boston from evicting Occupy Boston members from their encampment.

There was a festive atmosphere as the deadline passed, with protesters chanting, “We are the 99 percent”. They even held a dance with a live band.

At about 12:45 a.m. protesters sat down in the middle of Atlantic Ave forcing traffic to come to a halt.

Some of the protesters began cleaning up their campsites and moving out Thursday, but the crowd just kept growing as midnight approached.

The protesters were prepared for police action, and many were wearing gas masks, protective goggles and practiced forming a human chain.

Although the protesters were planning for a raid, the Boston Police were not. Shortly after 1 a.m. Boston Police Superintendent William Evans walked through the camp telling protesters that police would not clear Dewey Square.

No one seems to be guessing what's next for Occupy Boston, as they seem quite content at the moment to enjoy the party and the relief that they aren't facing possible violent arrests. One thing is certain, what Boston's mayor saw as a relatively small 'problem' in Dewey Square has now grown substantially. They also have their own brass band, and they are quite good, actually.
