Santorum Glitter-Bombed by Occupy Charleston
Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum was greeting supporters after his loss in the South Carolina primary when an activist greeted him with a burst of glitter.

As Santorum closed his speech focusing on building strong family values, a gay rights activist said: "Except when you're gay" and threw a handful of glitter in the air.
Members of the Occupy Charleston group joined in with chants of "Rick, Rick, Rick, bigot, bigot, bigot" and singing "Santorum, Santorum, you're a bigot." As police escorted the group out, they shouted about Jesus preaching love.
The police escorted many members of the movement off-campus and would not allow them to retreive their vehicles parked there. But there were no arrests or incidents.
This isn’t the first time Santorum was glitter-bombed, he was also targeted during his final campaign event in Iowa late in December.
Santorum is frequently targeted by gay activists because of his never-ending anti-gay rights rhetoric.
If he gets glitter-bombed again he'll likely contract teh gay himself.

I'm all for gay rights and heaping criticism on radical right wing bigots like Rick, but they came off looking really lame. Screaming at him and hitting him with glitter isn't helpful, and doing it under the banner of "Occupy" is really counterproductive. Those kind of events don't need that, especially when people are frieked out about some loony-toon shooting up the place.

Sounds like a waste of perfectly good glitter to me. If common sense and humanity do not work to change little Ricky's mind, I doubt if a tube of glitter will do the trick. Let's try to get him to visit a hospital where a gay patient is dying alone because his/her family won't allow his/her partner to visit. I think that might carry more weight.

But, the hospital visitation thing was largely addressed by the poorly publicized HHS rule change that forces hospital to allow same sex partner visitation rights if they want to receive Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement. One of the good things done by this Pres that folks don't hear about very much...

Phoenix isn't saying Santorum isn't a creep, just that part of a democratic society includes the idea that we treat everyone with a degree of civility, including people we disagree with.
I didn't miss anything. He made a point about what he takes issue with. I made a point about what I take issue with. I juxtaposed them because I thought it was an effective juncture to do so, hopefully making some think about both. The end.

Glitter, cream pies, or water balloons, it doesn't matter. It is an assault upon a public official*, and should be prosecuted as such without pulling any punches.

throwing glitter and shooting someone are not even close to the same thing. glitter doesn't hurt, nor does it injure. i seriously doubt he's gonna have ptsd from glitter. so prosecuting someone for throwing glitter as if they had just shot someone is crazy. if i call you an idiot is that the same thing as punching you in the face? nobody got hurt nor was anyone going to be hurt so acting like a glitter bomb is an assassination attempt is a good way to see the end of your civil liberties.
This sort of action accomplishes nothing, in my humble opinion. Sure, they get on videos ...but what is the end result? The Democrats look unruly and out of control. Rick the "gay-basher" goes right on preaching his message.
I prefer when people put the questions to these fools...and let them explain their positions in the face of "real people" living real lives that are affected by their ignorance. Glitter accomplishes nothing. Same as a pie in the face, and just makes "occupy" look like out of control protesters with a weak message.

They are adults. And for all a candidate knows it could be acid or God knows what instead of glitter. Its a childish stunt that makes our side look foolish and accomplishes nothing. It also sets a bad precedent. Their side might retaliate with something more than glitter.
i'm not saying throwing glitter around is a good or bad strategy. i'm just saying that people who want it to be treated the same as a violent act or compare it to an assassination attempt are wrong. treating one thing as something else is stupid. i'm sure santorum peed his pants a little for half a second, i'd say gay people are way more scared of someone like him becoming president and taking away their right to choose who they sleep with, forever. and if were worried about what their side will do it's all ready way past glitter. they want to attend these types of meetings with assault rifles. but that's ok, as long as there's no glitter? once again, it's just glitter, not anthrax, not a grenade, glitter so it should be treated as glitter and not something more dangerous than glitter. seems pretty simple, call it what it is but i guess whether or not glitter is glitter or plastic explosive is still up for debate.
you're right they are not seven-year-olds just like glitter is not acid, except that what happens to the human body when attacked with glitter is the same whether an adult or kid throws it at you. the difference between glitter and acid is a little more significant.
