Occupy Round-up for Sunday February 12, 2012

A group of Occupiers attempted to “mic check” Sarah Palin's keynote speech at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Saturday. The audience drowned out the occupiers with boos, chants of “U.S.A.” and “Sarah!” before they were escorted away.

“See? You just won. You see how easy that is?” Palin asked as the protesters were removed from the room.

Not sure what Palin thinks they "won," but happy to leave it at that. I wouldn't want to have to listen to her explain it.

Thousands of people in Japan marched on Saturday to protest against nuclear power. Common Dreams has the details.

California Democrats held their annual convention in San Diego on Saturday, and about 100 Occupy members showed up for the event, too.

The Occupy movement is beginning to move into universities around the country. One professor in Chicago is teaching an "Occupy Everywhere" course and says that a third of the political science majors are enrolled in his class.

Two Occupy Oakland protesters were arrested after a march on Saturday. A woman was arrested for allegedly kicking a police officer, and a male protester who tried to pull her from officers was arrested for "attempting to unlawfully intervene." When he gets out of jail, I suppose he will have to allow the woman to kick away next time?

2012 World Press Photo of the Year

The winning photo was taken inside a mosque in Sanaa, Yemen, that was being used as a field hospital by demonstrators against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. It's an extraordinarily powerful image, showing a woman holding a wounded relative in her arms.

1,000 Rally at Meeting over Two Dozen School Closings

More than one thousand students, parents, teachers and Occupy Wall Street protesters rallied in New York City on Thursday at a vote over the closing of two dozen public schools. The protesters, under the umbrella group Occupy the DOE, tried to stop the vote from happening. Using the human microphone, the protesters disrupted the meeting at times but were unsuccessful in stopping the closing of 23 schools. New York public school teacher Brian Jones and high school student Tafador Saurov helped organize the protests.

Very informative reading. FYI, there's another site on YouTube with some very interesting music-video takes on the Occupy movement, designed to provide some relevant "entertainment" for the occupiers "between engagements, as the poster says.

Ahead of next month's presidential election in Russia, a group of journalists, bloggers and proactive figures have created a League of Voters in a bid to make the upcoming poll fair and transparent. The League will mostly deal with training volunteer observers and spreading information about violations at the polling stations. The move comes after tens of thousands of people across Russia took to the streets saying December parliamentary election was rigged.

From Reuters:

Even the police, who have repeatedly clashed with protesters since the crisis broke out more than two years ago, announced resistance to the creditors' demands.

"As we can see you are continuing this destructive policy, so we warn you that you cannot make us fight against our brothers," the Greek Police Federation said in an open letter to the troika.

"We warn you that as legal representatives of the Greek police, we will issue arrest warrants for a series of legal violations ... such as blackmail, covert abolition or erosion of democracy and national sovereignty."

From Bloomberg:

The Greek police officers’ union called for arrest warrants to be issued for European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund officials negotiating austerity measures for a national debt bailout.

The Greek Federation of Police Officers said in a published letter it will ask for arrest warrants for former European Commission representative Servaas Deroose, the IMF’s Poul Thomsen and the ECB’s Klaus Masuch. Under Greek law, arrest warrants must be issued by an appellate court prosecutor, a police spokesman in Athens said today, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with official regulations.

“We warn you that we will demand, as legal representatives of the Greek police according to Greek law, that warrants for your arrest are immediately issued,” according to the letter published on the union’s website.
