Ellen Barkin Harassed by NYPD

Actress Ellen Barkin - born and raised in New York - tweeted early Sunday morning about a disturbing encounter she witnessed between the NYPD, and a young girl she tried to help as she was being arrested. The video above shows Barkin, confronted by an NYPD officer who physically moves her back on to the sidewalk, and then walks away from her as she questions his actions.

"I was trying 2 make my way 2 young girl they had thrown in2 the van.She was not a protester. Was not drunk. She was walking home," she wrote.

Later in the day, she had this to say about the actions of the NYPD, "I have never been afraid of a NY policeman until last nite. What I saw was random & senseless arrests and unnecessarily threatening behavior."

Barkin is an outspoken progressive and advocate of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

act last night, given their brutal treatment of OWS protestors and the fact that downtown NYC was going to be packed with rowdy revellors, as well as the inevitable OWS protestors.

Now we know, from various sources, that they were indescriminately brutal on a rather random basis.

When the police abandon their duty to the people but instead become the defenders of the ruling class they treat all citizens with contempt.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

I've been around cop's my whole life and one thing has been a constant recurring fact, People who become police officer's usually have the best of intention's in the beginning, but somewhere in their career's they become jaded to everything and everyone they took an oath to protect and serve. They care not for anyone who question's their implied authority and more time's than not will react with violence to anyone including if not especially celebrities who put them on the carpet. This person did exactly what everyone who see's a wrong should do, it is your duty to question authority! They think your sheep and there the wolves. Good for you Ellen Barkin .

The commenters spent as much time insulting and ridiculing Barkin as they did talking about the details of the story itself. Pathetic.

There is an army of radical reich wingers constantly busy, busy, busy, out to discredit the 99% and the Occupy movement. They never tire, and they will never change.

Yeah, I know. Still pathetic, though, and depressing. Not how I wanted to start the new year. :(

Read this book by Paul Loeb, I bought it in 2003 when I thought things were hopeless. I realized after reading it that many others struggle too against difficult odds but irregardless of them--will never quit:

What was in the video? Was it a news report? It's been taken down.

She should not let the worker ants of the reich wing intimidate her - [if that's why she took it down].

When I became older enough, I realized the police had the power,
and I've have made a concious effort to never have reason to talk to one
or for one to talk to me..

I love Ellen Barkin.
I admire people who are rich & famous and need not be bothered by trying to help out the "little people". Ellen could be spending her time bedecked & bejeweled & beyachted and beprivate planed, and be all kinds of things associated with living the high life. I respect her for trying to help improve the lives of the working class and for taking the time & trouble to speak up for them and try to help defend them against police brutality and the threat of taking away their constitutional freedoms. I loved Ellen already, I love her more now.

This just reminds me of what Glenn Greenwald wrote today in his column about us having freedoms just as long as exercising them doesn't contradict the interests of the U.S. Government.

yakfitguy's picture

It's always been that way. They started jailing people for saying the wrong thing in the 1790's. However, it's gotten progressively worse since then. Freedom is a fragile thing.

First under Bush and then under Obama, the US government has advanced, with full sanction by the federal courts, an extremely broad reading of what constitutes “material support” to include anyone who engages in political activity that is in any way aligned with the actions of a supposedly “terrorist” organization. In several cases, the US government has even brought “material support” prosecutions against human rights activists who have advised nationalist movements fighting US-backed governments on how to shift from guerrilla war to electoral politics.
