Petition: Reduce $5,000 Bail for Occupy LA Protesters
After the violent arrest of 292 Occupy LA protesters on Nov. 30, 2011 the protesters had to endure sitting for an extended period in LAPD vans with their hands zip-tied behind their backs, the drive to central booking (A.K.A. Dodger Stadium) for a lengthy processing, and then they were hauled off to who knows where until arraignment. Bail for these peaceful defenders of free speech was set at the exorbitant amount of $5,000.
A petition is being circulated that urges the bail be reduced to something more befitting the horrendous crimes of which the occupiers are accused:
To be delivered to: Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor, The California State House, The California State Senate and Governor Jerry Brown
Dear Mayor Villaraigosa:We ask that you reduce the bail of the Occupiers who were arrested on November 30, 2011. We believe the bail, which is currently set at $5,000 per person, is outrageous. There is no justification for this amount of bail. None whatsoever. We urge you and the city council members of Los Angeles to reduce the bail immediately.
On November 30, 2011 approximately 200 Occupiers were in arrested in Los Angeles. Their bail is set at a whopping $5,000! This is outrageously high and unjust. Why is it set so high? Please sign the petition and demand that the bail be lowered ASAP.
The petition has reached just slightly more than half of its needed signatures. To view or to add your support to the petition for bail reduction, you may do so here.

Set the bail high so those commie kids don't go commit more crimes and victimize society.
These people are clearly a danger to the community.

They are not committing crimes and are not victimizing society. They are exercising their 1st amendment rights, speaking and standing up for the majority of citizens, and most likely including you and others too misinformed to know it. Our government has been bought off by huge corporations and other Big Money Interest, and are no longer representing the voters that elected them, but are now acting as tools for a very few of the Wealthiest and greediest to rob this country of our jobs and wealth, and effectively crashing our economy. Every one in this Country that is not in the .01$ should be outraged at the Police actions against these brave, determined, and rightfully concerned demonstrators for trying to make a difference and save this Country from the very wrong road it has been heading down.
I guess you missed the last part:
SNARK
Or do you even know what that means?
I don't believe in God. Teach a man to be a good citizen and you have solved the problem of life.

Post it on redit? Might do more there then on here. IDK.

That many were arrested after leaving the park and they were just exercising their freedom of assembly and speech.
I know I'll get flak for this, but to think some judge in TN has more sense than one here. Oh yeah, but I've been to court out here. My apologies to TN. LA is where the real conservatives live.
So why would anyone assume that those who deliberately submitted themselves to authority to make a point would ever show up in court?
Corruption favors the wealthy.
There shouldn't be any bail required. These people have broken no law. Release them now!
If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders.

I think excessive bail is addressed in the constitution somewhere?
Bill of rights 8th amendment perhaps? copy/paste
The Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1791, has three provisions. The cruel and unusual punishments clause restricts the severity of punishments that state and federal governments may impose upon persons who have been convicted of a criminal offense. The Excessive Fines Clause limits the amount that state and federal governments may fine a person for a particular crime. The Excessive Bail Clause restricts judicial discretion in setting bail for the release of persons accused of a criminal activity during the period following their arrest but preceding their trial.

on 5000 bail in that neck of the woods?

In California it seems to be 10 per cent by law. 500 bucks seems a little steep for a minor infraction.

America we call em' "misdemeanors"

Typically, at that amount, someone would need to secure with a newer vehicle or an open credit card. Curiously though, if you're a habitual criminal (and have a good relationship with a bondsman-- ie: haven't skipped bond), you can often get sprung on just the 10%. Don't ask me how I know... ;)

what any particular person is charged with. They won't all be the same and bail will depend on what it is alleged they did. And it also very much depends on what personal undertakings a defendant is prepared to accept regarding future behavior.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
The sole purpose of bail is to ensure the appearance of a defendant in court. Period. Nothing more than that.
It is amazing the length that conservatives will go to force people into what conservatives personally believe is "proper" behavior, but forcing an untried and unconvicted defendant to conform to such ideals is something even the radicals will seldom openly admit to.
They can't even wait for a trial before they want to the law to enforce their ideology? It's wrong even then, but it is slightly less odious.
Corruption favors the wealthy.
Do any of the people to whom this petition is to be sent have any authority to set or alter bail conditions?

mayor "Villa ray" himself.
(and no the mayor does not set bond)

for bail reduction. This is normally done during the intake process and before arraignment. It has to be requested by each individual. Experienced arrestees know to attempt this; I wouldn't expect newbies to ask for it.

Just how the hell is $5000 bail justified? Seems to me that we've got some judicial activism going on here, eh?
Every one of these people needs to lawyer-up and go to trial. Make these fascists show up in court to defend their (over)reaction.
Yep.
Gotta keep fighting the (fascist) man.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
