Thune & Pence: Bush Should Release Abramoff Records

Thune & Pence: Bush Should Release Abramoff Records

Think Progress:

On Fox News Sunday, Sen. John Thune (R-SD) said that the White House should release all records of contacts with Jack Abramoff:

WALLACE: Would you like to see the White House release records of all contacts, correspondence, phone calls, meetings, that Jack Abramoff had with people in the White House?

THUNE: Well, I'm one who believes that more is better, Chris, when it comes to disclosure and transparency. I'd be a big advocate for making records out there available.

Mike Pence (R-IN), appearing on Fox with Thune, agreed:

WALLACE: Congressman Pence, the same question I asked Senator Thune. Do you think that the White House should release all records? You talk about a crisis of confidence in Republican leadership. Should the White House release all records of contacts with Jack Abramoff?

PENCE: Absolutely. I think this president is a man of unimpeachable integrity. The American people have profound confidence in him, and as Abraham Lincoln said, give the people...read on

Frist on MTP:NSA-Stocks-Schiavo=distortions and untruths!

Bill Frist joined Tim Russert on MTP this morning and looked like a deer caught in the headlights for most of the show. Tim did do some follow up question for a change and at times did a good job, but he forgot to ask him about Ann Coulter's "rat poisoning" joke oddly enough.<snark> I think the pressure we have been putting on Tim finally showed today. Frist clearly couldn't come up with a rational explanation about Bush's warrantless spying program and stammered his way through most of the interview.

(MTP Transcript) On Terri Schiavo:

MR. RUSSERT: Do you regret going to the floor of the Senate and saying, "I watched the videotape and that's not a persistent vegetative state."

SEN. FRIST: No, I don't. I'm a physician. I was watching a board-certified neurologist...

MR. RUSSERT: Were you wrong?

SEN. FRIST: In terms of what? In terms of di-no. To raise the question in order to pass a law that says, "Let's give it more review?" No.

MR. RUSSERT: Were you wrong in your diagnosis?

SEN. FRIST: I didn't make the diagnosis. I raised the question of whether or not she's in a persistent vegetative state. If I had been there, I would have said, "Let’s use technology today, like spectrometry, like PET scans to get the diagnosis right," because the only reason you can remove that tube-the other thing...

MR. RUSSERT: No regrets?

He looked like a fool over his video taped diagnosis of Terri's condition and he wouldn't admit to Russert that he did make a diagnosis for her which was completely politically motivated? (not to mention probably unethical being a doctor and all.) Tim could have had an Oprah moment with Frist and said " You lied because you did make a diagnosis on TV. It was played over and over again." Please discuss his response to his stock scandal as well...

Hagel: Bush can't violate the law: Blasts Karl Rove also

Sen. Chuch Hagel was on THIS Week and blasted Karl Rove's politicization of terrorism and criticized the administration for attempting to use it to win elections: (rough transcript)
Hagel: National Security should never be held hostage to a political party, or a political issue or to an election-The American people expect more...

STEPHANOPOULOS: Is that what Rove is doing?

Hagel: I didn't like what Mr. Rove said because it frames terrorism...

More and more republicans are speaking out against Bush's warrantless eavesdropping.

Think Progress:

HAGEL: I don't believe, from what I've heard, but I’m going to give the administration an opportunity to explain it, that he has the authority now to do what he’s doing. Now, maybe he can convince me otherwise, but that’s OK.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But not yet.

HAGEL: Not yet. But that's OK. If he needs more authority, he just can't unilaterally decide that that 1978 law is out of date and he will be the guardian of America and he will violate that law. He needs to come back, work with us, work with the courts if he has to, and we will do what we need to do to protect the civil liberties of this country and the national security of this country...read on

I just got back from the Young Turks Filibuster party

That was fun. Thanks for all the props in the comments section below. I was glad to help do my best to keep it alive. I was going to do an hour and then it turned into two. Digby has a great post up now about thanking the Dems that have joined in on the filibuster based on their convictions. The Turks were great. I hope to do more spots with them in the future. I'm tired now so I'm off to bed.

Talk Show Sunday starts early. I have to see if Howard Kurtz is going to cover the Howell/Brady flap over at the Washington Post this week and how it will play out.

I'm going to start a Saturday night- "guess what wingnut blogger" will be on his show. I figure it's Hindraker's turn.

Check out Gilliard's take down of Jim VandeHei's article in the WaPo...read on

C&L appearing on The Young Turks Alito Marathon

I'll be going on with The Young Turks to support their Filibuster Alito marathon at around 9:00PM PST. If you listen in, here's a picture of me so you can put a face with the voice.
MyDD has a list you can call. It's important to get involved and let your Senator know what you think no matter how this turns out.

Reality v. Beltway Fantasy

Reality v. Beltway Fantasy

Could reporters and timid Democrats who think that it’s still 2002 and the country is awash in blind reverence for George Bush please take note of the following facts, and -- on every significant issue, from the Alito filibuster to Iraq withdraw to the NSA scandal -- adjust your thinking and tactics accordingly: From Thursday's CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll:

A majority of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate in November's congressional elections who opposes President Bush, and 58 percent consider his second term a failure so far, according to a poll released Thursday. . . .

Fewer people consider Bush to be honest and trustworthy now than did a year ago, and 53 percent said they believe his administration deliberately misled the public about Iraq's purported weapons program before the U.S. invasion in 2003, the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll found . . . ..

Fifty-eight percent of those polled said Bush's second term has been a failure so far, while 38 percent said they consider it a success. A smaller number -- 52 percent -- consider his entire presidency a failure to date, with 46 percent calling it successful. . . . But 51 percent of those polled said they were more likely to vote for a candidate in congressional elections who opposes Bush, while 40 percent said they were likely to vote for a candidate who backs the president.

And from the same poll, we have this:

Americans' overall assessment of the country today is fairly negative. Only 35% are satisfied with the way things are going in the United States; 65% are dissatisfied. This is consistent with Americans' generally dour mood on this measure for the past year.

And then there is this, from the new CBS/New York Times poll:

President Bush's approval rating is stuck at a dismal 42 percent as he heads into next week's State of the Union address, according to the latest CBS News/New York Times poll. Fifty-one percent of Americans give him a negative job approval rating. It's the first time in his presidency he'll give a State of the Union speech with a majority of the residents of the country saying they disapprove of the job he's doing. . . ..

At the same time, a clear majority, 64 percent, is concerned that the Bush administration’s anti-terrorism measures could threaten their civil liberties...

RedBull & ATM's

RedBull's & ATM's
Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic lobbyist who advised Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign said this in the Washington Post:
"The bloggers and online donors represent an important resource for the party, but they are not representative of the majority you need to win elections," said Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic lobbyist who advised Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign. "The trick will be to harness their energy and their money without looking like you are a captive of the activist left."

WTF does that mean? So the only thing we represent to this nitwit is a couple of cans of Red Bull and a shit load of ATM machines. I'll have more on Jim " the Pool Boy" VandeHei's article later. Let's just say, it's another work of fiction that is being passed off as journalism. Just read the title of the piece: "Blogs Attack From Left as Democrats Reach for Center," and that tells you what you need to know, but please read the article since any time we complain about something the MSNBC's of the world think we don't actually watch Hardball.

Matt Stoller has a great piece posted about this story
